Intentional Questions to Help Your Team Overcome Barriers
Leaders, if you are trying to troubleshoot a problem with your direct reports, it can be easy to jump straight in and start giving advice or telling them what you think they should do or what has worked for you.
While it is true that that kind of counsel can help your employees learn and grow, magic happens when they make those determinations on their own.
So what if, instead of just jumping in to give advice, you started asking some thoughtful and intentional questions. Questions like:
"What's the desired outcome that you want to get to? What do you think that person's desired outcome is?"
"What barriers exist to getting you to that outcome?"
"What ideas do you have for overcoming those barriers?"
These may sound like straightforward questions, but they will open up a world of possibilities for your team members.
